The Shorewood girls swim team took five firsts and eased to victory in the State Small Schools Invitational it hosted Saturday.

"This was an incredible team meet today for the girls," said Greyhound coach Rob McCabe. "This is our first step into the championship season and I like the direction we are headed. All season these girls have raced to the level of competition next to them. Today was no different, and racing this quality of opponent will help us move forward."

Shorewood scored 294 points. Plymouth was second with 278, Whitefish Bay third (245) and Brown Deer/University School ninth (129). A total of 17 teams took part.

Kristin Malone had wins in the 50-yard freestyle (pool record 23.83) and the 100 free (pool record 51.66).

She also helped the 200 medley relay team including Melissa Clausen, Rachel Munson and Ellen Stello to another victory (1:51.13), as well as also anchoring the 400 free team of Stello, Genevieve Hayes and Chloe Borut to another win in 3:44.28.

The 200 individual medley also was a major source of energy for the Greyhounds, as Stello won in 2:12.9 followed by Munson in second in 2:12.99. Stello was also second in the 500 free (5:16.19) while Clausen was third in the 100 backstroke (1:02.64), Munson third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.11) and Hayes fourth in the 500 free (5:24.99). The 200 free relay team of Clausen, Munson, Diana Yakshimamedova and Hayes, was fifth (1:46.49).

For Whitefish Bay, highlights included the following: 200-yard medley relay of Lissy Maercklein, Sarah Olver, Annelise Sprau and Caroline Kucha, third (1:53.81); 200 individual medley, Olver, third (2:17.67); 100 butterfly, Sprau, second (59.43); 50 free, Sprau, sixth (25.27); 100 backstroke, Maercklein, fourth (1:03.12); 100 breaststroke, Olver, fourth (1:11.07); 400 free relay of Sabrina Raber, Olver, Maercklein and Sprau, second (3:47.08).

For Brown Deer/USM, the Falcons were led by the following efforts:

Malone won her two individual races and set meet and pool records, as well. Stello swam right on times, winning the 200 IM and finishing second in the 500 free. Munson had two top three finishes, Hayes medaled in her two races and Clausen took the bronze in the 100 back.
