A fast start got even better for the Knights on Saturday, as with wins over Onalaska (2-0) and host Wisconsin Rapids (3-0), they successfully defended their championship in the Hubcap Classic.
"I think the best thing that came out of this, was that we were able to string together two games where we played 80 minutes of good soccer both times out," said Nicolet coach Tony Quintero. "We have to work on a few things defensively, as we had a hard time finishing despite seven breakaways in the first game, but our defense has been extremely solid."
The two wins improved the Knights to 6-2 on the still-young season (1-1 in the North Shore). They took on a tough Grafton team Tuesday and now will be at the Catholic Memorial Invite at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee on Friday and Saturday.
They will face defending state Division 2 champion Memorial at 4 p.m. Friday.
Forward Tierney Snow had two goals in the tournament and Quintero praised the work of defenders Briana Lopez, Becca Stern, Sam Lautmann and Becca Olin. Lopez, midfielders Abby Williams and Emily Spector are the tri-captains this season.
"We have been very solid defensively, no one got a shot off against us this weekend," said Quintero.
Offensively, senior forward Jennifer Winston, who had three goals in a North Shore win over Port Washington on April 20, has been a "real engine" for the team and sophomore forward Laila Eslami has also been effective, said Quintero.

With defending state high hurdles champ Marissa Savitch getting to stretch her legs and win two events and Katelyn Wright setting a school record in the pole vault, the Highlanders used their traditional balance to win their second outdoor meet in as many tries at the Watertown Invitational on Friday.
The Highlanders will now head out with the boys to the Benson Invitational at Wauwatosa West on Friday. The three-entry per event meet will give Homestead coaches one last good judgment call on people before the North Shore Conference Relays at Cedarburg on May 5.
Homestead scored 142- 3/4 points for its victory in the nine-school Watertown meet as D2 power Lakeside Lutheran was second with 128- 3/4 .
Savitch cruised to victory in her two races, coming across in 15.55 seconds in the 100 high hurdles (15.18 in the trials) and then racing to a 48.16 clocking in the 300 lows. She beat state medalist Madeline Emme of Watertown (48.67) in the lows but Emme false-started in her heat of the highs.
Wright, a co-captain this year, cleared 10-0 for her win in the vault. Also in the field events, Natalie Goniu (97-10) and Lauren LaDell (97-6) went one-two, respectively, in the discus.
Another win went to Keali Bjork in the 800 (2:22.13). Bjork's weekend got even better Saturday, when she was named prom queen.
Other top places by event for the Highlanders included the following: 100: Ashley Heding, second (13.08); 1,600: Caity Bobber, second (5:22.61); 3,200: Lauren Holtz, second (11:33.13); Kelsey Boyle, third (11:33.33); 100 high hurdles: Kacey Colley, third (17.13); 3,200 relay: Emily Jeanpierre, Carolyn Apfelbach, Alex Holtz and Dana Griepentrog, third (10:15.32).

The defending D2 state champions continue to challenge themselves, as they dropped a 6-1 nonconference decision to returning state D1 champ Marquette on Monday.
Prior to that, they won the Waukesha Quad last weekend, defeating Franklin, 4-3, Waukesha South, 7-0, and Verona, 7-0.
The Wildcats' singles players continue to lead the way, winning every match in the Waukesha Quad. Sam Walker, Andrew Hwang, Rishi Karri and Mike Lukas lead the way. The tournament was moved to the Racine Indoor Club on Saturday to get away from the rainy and cold weather.
USM coach Russ Trimble was pleased with the overall play of the Wildcats during the weekend.
"As a team we seemed to just keep improving, and that's our goal, to keep improving each day and match," he said.
Against Marquette, Walker had an excellent match against the Hilltoppers' first singles player Tim Noack, but dropped a tough 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 decision.

A little rain didn't bother the Highlanders on Saturday, as they swept past Madison Edgewood, Green Bay Preble and Kenosha Tremper to win the Madison Memorial Invitational.
Homestead defeated Edgewood and Preble by 7-0 counts while outlasting the traditional state power Tremper Trojans, 5-2.
All the matches against Tremper were straight sets. Alex Jesse at first singles (6-4, 7-5) and Nakhil Ramnaryan (7-5, 6-2) pulled out tough decisions for the Highlanders.
Against Preble, Homestead dropped only 21 games in seven matches as David Stockbridge and Justin Kirtley (6-4, 6-3) at second doubles had the toughest match.
That pair also pulled out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision against Edgewood as the Highlanders lost only 13 games in four singles matches.
Homestead opened defense of its North Shore Conference title with a 7-0 blanking of Grafton on April 22, losing only six games. The Highlanders will be at the Neenah Invitational on Saturday and then will be at Nicolet on May 4 in a critical league dual.

The Blue Dukes swept past three more opponents last week to remain unbeaten on the young season.
They routed Hononegah (Ill.), 7-0, on Saturday; overpowered Slinger, 4-0, on April 21, and downed North Shore opponent Germantown, 5-2, on April 20.
Bay will have a challenging weekend schedule, heading to Burlington, Iowa, for games against both Illinois and Iowa opponents.
Against Hononegah, Bay scored six goals in the first half and coasted from there. Abby Starker continued her torrid start to the season with two goals while Michaela Cohen, Kylie Davidson, Katie Sullivan, Jamie Talbert and Talia Dacquisto, all also found the back of the net.
The Blue Dukes were equally as unchallenged against Slingeras Starker had two goals and Lydia Kaminsky and Cohen one apiece.
Bay shot out to a 3-0 lead against feisty Germantown (6-2) and then held off the Warhawks for the win. Kaminsky had two scores while Kelsey Corrigan, Katie Sullivan and Kaitlin Theder all had a goal apiece. Starker helped out with two assists and Sarah Platzer had six saves.

The Knights edged Homestead, 172-173, to win the second North Shore Conference mini-meet of the season on Monday at Hidden Glen as Rob Bamberger was third individually with a nine-hole score of 41.
Homestead had won the first league mini of the season. The conference teams will meet again Monday at Tripoli Country Club.

More competitive than their 2-6 overall record would suggest, the Greyhounds got their first Woodland Conference win of the season April 20 with a 17-5 decision over Thomas More.
"At times we have looked very good this season," said Shorewood coach Dave Berghaus. "I think as the season progresses, we will get better."
The Greyhounds will get to test that theory as they take part in a six-game week, including their own tournament, which they will co-host with Whitefish Bay on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
Pool play will have round-robin events at Bay (Brookfield Central and Wauwatosa West) and at Shorewood (Wauwatosa East and Milwaukee Hamilton). A championship game will be played at 3 p.m. at Bay and a consolation tilt will be held at the same time at Shorewood.
In the win over More, Shorewood got three hits, two runs scored and three RBI from senior catcher Raifeh Saqer, along with two hits, including a two-run homer from senior leftfielder Kim Pham.
Second baseman Quincy Rice, Addie Prochnow and Celia Carroll combined on a nifty 4-6-3 double play in the third that shut down a Cavaliers rally.
Kaitlyn Wick got the win, throwing five innings, scattering four hits with two strikeouts. The sophomore utility player Prochnow was five for nine overall last week (including losses to New Berlin West and Cudahy). Shorewood has only three seniors on the roster this spring.

The Falcons got five goals from senior forward Vicky Rivera and improved to 4-5 overall on the season with a 6-1 nonconference win over Waupun on Monday.
Rivera also assisted on the only other goal which was scored by sophomore midfielder Erin Sellers. Senior forward Kristy Reichmann had two assists while junior midfielder Jessica Baran also had an assist. Rivera had a hat trick at the half as the score was 3-1.
The Falcons will visit New Berlin West at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and then will host Shorewood at 4:30 p.m. May 4.

Olivia Tehan's hard hit, point-blank goal from the right side just three minutes into the second half was the kind of textbook play Homestead girls soccer coach Rich Dorn was looking for all game long, as the Highlanders held off a tough Menomonee Falls squad, 1-0, Thursday night.
"They were an aggressive and physical team and we needed to get the ball more in space," Dorn said. "Kate (Wirthlin) made a gorgeous cross and Olivia had a perfect finish. Just like you want to draw it up."
The win improved the Highlanders to 5-0-1 on the young season while the Indians fell to 4-2-1.
Dorn praised Falls for its tenacity, noting that the Indians won a lot of 50/50 balls which denied the Highlanders chances to use their speed in the first half. Falls got the better of play in the opening minutes and again put on a bit of a rush at the end, but never really threatened.
Falls goalie Karlie Stadler had several sound efforts, but had no real chance on the fast-moving play that resulted in the goal. Homestead dominated play in the second half (9-0 advantage shots on goal) and hit the crossbar twice with shots.
"This was good competition," Dorn said. "Falls played really, really hard with great intensity. I thought we played a sound game both technically and tactically. The quality of game we wanted was there."
On April 20, the Highlanders improved to 1-0-1 in North Shore play with a 4-1 win over Milwaukee Lutheran. Tehan had a hat trick as Kim McGinnis had the other goal. Lindsey Jagler, Zoe Ziegler and Megan Eisenbrown all had assists.
The Highlanders will host Sheboygan North at 11 a.m. Saturday.

It was a productive week for the Greyhound netters as they went 2-1 in dual meets.
They defeated Woodland opponents Cudahy (April 20) and St. Francis (April 22) by matching 6-1 scores and lost a 6-1 decision to nonconference area rival Whitefish Bay on April 21.
In the win over St. Francis, Jimmy Lilly had the signature win according to coach Justin Olson, with a 6-1, 6-1, triumph at fourth singles.
Against Bay, the Greyhounds couldn't compete against the Blue Dukes' depth but the first doubles team of Jake Miller and Sawyer Carlson-Price did pick up a valuable three-set triumph.
And against Cudahy, the doubles teams of Carlson-Price and Miller, Joe Richter and Jordan Wise and Arthur Staub and Ben Brody dropped a combined total of just four games in cruising to their victories.
Shorewood will be at the Delavan-Darien Invite on Saturday.

The Falcons boys and girls each took seventh in the Sheboygan South Redwing Invitational last Friday.
Brown Deer scored 44 points in the boys meet that was won by Fond du Lac (172.5). Best finishes included a second by Lawrence Rabon in the 200 (23.2), a third by Jacob Schimenz in the 800 (2:04.05) and a fourth from Drew Jones in the discus (142-9)
Taking fifths were Rabon in the 100 (11.73), Evan Naber in the 110 high hurdles (17.46) and Brian Michalica in the triple jump (36-3 1/4 ).
The girls scored 42 points for their spot as Green Bay Notre Dame won with 147.5.
Asia Cheeks won the 100 high hurdles in 16.66, tied for second in the high jump (4-8) and was fourth in the 300 low hurdles (50.95).
Ariel Kinlow was second in both the 100 (12.99) and the 200 (26.81).
The Woodland Conference Relays will be at South Milwaukee on May 4.

Behind a quick win from J. J. Bersch in singles, the Falcons defeated St. Francis, 6-1, in a Woodland dual on April 20.
They were scheduled to take part in the Tosa West Invitational on Saturday, but the event was knocked out by rain. It was not known if the event was going to be made up or not.
The Falcons will now host their own eight-team dual meet format invite this weekend on Friday and Saturday at various sites. Play will begin at 3:15 p.m. Friday and continue at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Teams involved included Racine Prairie, Kenosha St. Joe's, Oak Creek, St. Francis, Port Washington, South Milwaukee and Milwaukee Lutheran.
Coach Jim Matousek was pleased with the overall drive of the Falcons in the victory over St. Francis. It marked the first time this season that Brown Deer swept all three doubles matches.

A runner-up finish by Mark Taibleson in the discus and a top 10 state honor roll effort from the third place 400-meter relay team of Lamar Johnson-Harris, Winston Hermann, Christian Smith and Brandon Kappel, led the Knights to a ninth-place showing in the powerhouse Germantown Invitational on Friday.
Taibleson turned in an early season best of 144 feet-6 inches in earning his spot as Homestead's Justin Barber turned in yet another state best effort of 179-6.
The 400 relay was clocked in 44.47 for its spot as Vincent turned in one of nine state best efforts at the meet with a 43.42 showing.
Those efforts led Nicolet to a 26-point tally in the 17-school field as Homestead won with 133.5.
Other places by event for the Knights included the following: 100: Smith, sixth (11.62); 1,600: Nathan Frazer, fourth (4:36.77); and triple jump: Kappel, fifth (39-4 1/2 ). Jeff McClain turned in a season best of 2:05.5 in taking ninth in the 800.

The Knights were on the edge of success in the Brookfield East Spartan Invitational but instead settled for a 1-2 record in the high-level event.
They defeated Hartland Arrowhead 7-0, but then dropped tough 4-3 decisions to both Eau Claire Memorial and Brookfield Central.
"They weren't terrible matches, but it would have been a lot better if they had been 4-3 the other way," said Knights coach Tim Koppa. "There were a lot of close individual matches."
Nicolet will be at the Verona Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
In the loss to Eau Claire, David Yarmulnik and David Gorodetsky picked up singles wins as did the doubles duo of Quinn Ellsworth and Jacob Levey. Against Brookfield, the Knights lost all the singles matches but won all the doubles.
Nicolet also scored an important 5-2 decision over border rival Bay in a North Shore dual meet April 22. The Knights lost the top two singles matches, but then won all the rest, including a three-setter by the second doubles team of Ethan Taxman and Richard Kim.

The Highlanders didn't handle the cold and the wet of the MACC Fund/Lake Country Invitational on Saturday very well and saw its varsity and varsity reserve tie at the Brookfield Central Skins Invite on April 22 at Wanaki.
"The conditions were bad on Saturday, but not as bad as we were, and on Thursday I took both a varsity and a varsity reserve and they tied, so that shows what kind of lousy coach I am (laughs)," Highlanders coach Steve O'Brien said. "It was just a rough week for us."
The Highlanders, who were also nipped by Nicolet in the most recent North Shore mini-meet on Monday at Hidden Glen, will head off to La Crosse for the Onalaska Invitational on Friday. The road trip should be fun, said O'Brien, as the Highlanders will travel on the same coach bus with teams from Menomonee Falls and Brookfield Central.
Jordan Niebrugge medaled at the North Shore mini on Monday with a nine-hole total of 39 but Nicolet still edged the Highlanders 172-173.
At the MACC Fund meet, where Niebrugge didn't play, Homestead took 21st with Kyle Waugaman leading the way with an 18-hole score of 86 on a soggy Brown Deer course.
The varsity and varsity reserve tied at the Skins meet at Wanaki with 18-hole scores of 331 as Niebrugge shot a 76 and Joe Tautges 77 for the varsity. Waugaman led the varsity reserve squad with a 77 on the windy but dry day.
