Homestead girls track
Behind a dominating state-best winning time from the 3,200-meter relay team of Caity Bobber, Lauren Holtz, Sarah Miller and Keali Bjork, the Highlanders girls were fourth of 25 in the Lake Michigan Indoor Invitational on Saturday.
"That was a pretty impressive effort," said Highlanders coach John Kruger. "Victor (distance coach Vilar) and I watched it and we were wondering if they were going to break the school (outdoor) record of 9:34. ... It's a real credit to those kids. They did great things last fall (in cross country) and they knew they had something special coming into this spring, so they just worked all that much harder over the winter."
The group didn't quite get the record but they did turn in a very quick time of 9:41.06 in winning the event by 17 seconds. The victory led the Highlanders to a fourth place finish with 46 points as Lake Central (Ill.) dominated with 112 points.
Defending state 100 high hurdle champ Marissa Savitch remained consistent at the meet with another red-hot winning time in the 55 hurdles (8.41). She already has the two best times in the state this spring by substantial margins.
"This just shows how much Marissa really pushed herself in the off-season," said Krueger.
Other distance efforts included a fifth by Kelsey Boyle (5:29.13) and a sixth by Dana Griepentrog (5:29.78) in the 1,600 and a second by Bobber in the 3,200 (11:30.48).
Also placing for the Highlanders were Bjork in the 400 (sixth, 1:02.67); Ashley Heding in the triple jump (fourth, 32-9); and the 800 relay team of Savitch, Kacie Kelly, Amy Slawson and Heding (sixth, 1:53.5).
Homestead hosted the North Shore Conference Indoor on Wednesday (see MequonNOW.com for details).
University School boys tennis
The University School boys' tennis team is poised to make a run at its fifth consecutive WIAA Division 2 State Championship.
Stephen Bloch, who along with Russ Trimble is a co-head coach of the team, is pleased with the team's prospects.
"With seven returning varsity players and close to 15 boys trying out for the remaining spots, the team looks to be very strong," said Bloch.
"Many of this year's players are twelve-month-a-year players with lots of tournament experience. We have the largest tennis roster in my twelve years of coaching, with 42 players signed up."
Experienced hands for USM include seniors Sam Walker, Rishi Karri, Fitz Stratton, John Rusch and Andy Vandenberg, and junior Mike Black.
Bloch and Trimble have scheduled several tough matches to keep the team's competitive edge solid. Big matches include Division 1 opponents Brookfield Central on April 21, Marquette on April 26, and Homestead on May 12. USM will also participate in the powerhouse Nicolet Sweet 16 Invite on May 7 and 8.
