Nicolet axes football coach after one season

Team finished 1-8, 0-7 in conference

Nicolet — There will be a new football coach at Nicolet next fall as Everett Jenkins did not have his contract renewed for the 2010 season.

"All I can say," said Nicolet Superintendent Rick Monroe, "is that we are planning on a different coach next fall. We (a five-person committee) are interviewing people over the winter break with the idea of having a new coach in place early next year."

Jenkins, a former offensive line coach for the three-time state champion Homestead program, was an associate head coach with Rob Rinka in 2008 and assumed the formal head coaching duties this past fall. The Knights, who have not had a winning record in many years, went 1-8, including 0-7 in the North Shore Conference.

It was thought that the winning habits of Jenkins and another former Homestead assistant, offensive coordinator Drake Zortman, could help turn things around for Nicolet.

Monroe pointed out that all Nicolet head coaches are on one-year contracts and are either renewed or not at the completion of each season.

"That way no one needs to resign or quit," said Monroe, "and the school district doesn't need to fire anyone either."

Monroe declined to go into the specific reasons why Jenkins' contract was not renewed.

Nicolet Athletics Coordinator Kirk Krychowiak said the initial list of prospects has been screened and that a candidate will be put before the School Board sometime in January. He said all the contracts of the assistant coaches are handled on a separate basis.
