Shorewood boys swimming
The Greyhounds dominated the Woodland Conference Relay Meet at Cudahy, winning five events and finishing second in three others on the way to the team title.
"We had a real good night," Shorewood coach Rob McCabe said. "Our depth was a strength and it was neat to see how strong the other teams in the conference are. I believe we should be in for quite a battle all season with New Berlin."
Shorewood's Stephen Meyer, Asher Kaufman, Mike Ross and Arthur Staub won the 100 medley relay in 49.46 seconds to set a meet record.
Other Shorewood wins came in the 200 free (Andrew Eder, Staub, Isaac Flegel-Mishlove, R.J. Hayes; 1:36.07); the 800 freestyle (Henry Sanders, Kevin Weisling, Flegel-Mishlove, Jay Tomasiewicz; 8:07.42); the 400 freestyle (Tomasiewicz, Staub, Flegel-Mishlove, Hayes; 3:32.5) and the 300 backstroke relay (Weisling, Peter Morris, Derek Lock, Meyer; 2:54.74).
The Greyhounds were second in the 200 medley, the 400 IM and 500 freestyle.
Shorewood had 176 total points at the meet, which was held Wednesday. New Berlin Eisenhower/West was second with 164. Brown Deer/USM was third with 132.
Nicolet, Bay boys basketball
The Knights continued their undefeated start to the season with a 58-55 victory at home over Whitefish Bay on Friday in the North Shore Conference opener.
The victory improved Nicolet to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Bay, last season's conference champion, fell to 2-2, 0-1.
"It was a great opportunity for us to start the conference season by facing the defending champions," Nicolet coach Paul Hepp said. "I'm proud of our guys for taking advantage of it and starting the year in the right direction."
Bay led at halftime, 30-29, behind a blistering second quarter from senior guard John Johnston. Johnston scored 15 points in the frame, including four 3-pointers, and led all scorers with 23 points. Bay got 11 points each from Ron Patten and Jamie Schneck.
"The game was a tough one that could have gone either way," Bay coach Kevin Lazovik said. "Nicolet made some plays down the stretch, and we did not answer often enough. They have a lot of guys with varsity experience and will be a tough team in the conference."
Myles Henry scored 17 points to lead Nicolet's balanced scoring attack. Christian Griggs-Williams scored 15, Clem Robinson had 10 and Jared James eight.
"I think the toughest teams to defend are those that have multiple consistent scoring threats, so as an offense, that's what we are going to strive for," Hepp said. "With that said, the group of players we have this year lends to the fact that we should have fairly balanced scoring on a fairly regular basis."
That balance was apparent in the case of Tre Kinlow, who scored four points, all coming in the fourth quarter. His biggest basket came in the final seconds when he drove the baseline and scored to extend the lead to three points.
Bay had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but Nicolet's defense pressured Johnston into taking a tough shot that did not find the net.
Nicolet has knocked off Kenosha Tremper and Marquette thus far this season and entered the week tied for the conference lead with Port Washington. The Knights and Pirates were to meet at Port on Tuesday. Nicolet will host Grafton on Friday and Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday in a non-conference game.
The Blue Dukes were to play at Germantown on Tuesday and will host Port Washington on Friday.

Alex Cohen matched a season-high with 13 points to lead a balanced offensive attack as the Knights won their North Shore Conference opener, 48-27, at Whitefish Bay.
Brittney Fair and Ashley Green had nine points each and Gaby Bronson chipped in eight for the Knights, who began this week 3-1 overall.
Green had not scored fewer than 17 points prior to Friday, but Cohen, who had 13 in a win over Brookfield Central on Dec. 4 as well, picked up the slack.
The Knights outscored the Blue Dukes, 26-12, in the second half to pull away.
Bay got 11points from Jessica Switzer but dipped to 2-2 as of Monday.

"It was a great team effort," Bay coach Jim Davis said. "Out of the 13 events, we had five firsts, one second, three thirds and and three fourths. We still came back strong and missed out on winning by six points. This is a very competitive team and enjoys a challenge."
Members of the 400 medley (3:51.03) were Chris Fink, Jason Castillo, Tommy Hiller and Rob Colton.
