Whitefish Bay, Homestead girls cross country
What a difference a week makes.
Just seven days removed from a stunning upset at the hands of North Shore rival Homestead at Arrowhead, the defending state champion Whitefish Bay girls cross country team turned the tables on the Highlanders on Sept.17, sweeping the first three individual places and dominating its own Vandon Avond Invite at Kletzsch Park.
"It was a weird meet," said Blue Duke coach Mike Miller. "The course gets tight quick and you have to be in position in a hurry. It helped that our girls knew how to run it and that they had targets painted on the backs of the Homestead runners."
That's because of the Highlanders stunning upset of the top-ranked in state and defending state champion Blue Dukes the week before at the Arrowhead Invite.
"In the big picture, I still view this as being at the indoor portion of the season," Miller said. "There's a long ways to go, but I was really, really pleased by this."
Homestead coach Victor Vilar, whose team vaulted into second in the state rankings with the Arrowhead win, was concerned about how his team did not get out well in the first portion of the race, but like Miller, was looking at the bigger picture.
"Our girls got stuck way in back by the 2-kilometer mark and that was just way too much room to give a team like Bay," he said. "We were 10 to 15 seconds back by that point. That's not meant to discredit Bay. They really hammered this race. It was their course and they had something to prove."
The Blue Dukes scored just 36 points as Homestead was second with 73 and Germantown third with 93. A total of 14 schools were involved in the event.
State track 3,200 champ Kenzie Vicker won the race, covering the 4,000-meter course in 15 minutes 17 seconds as teammates Emma-Lisa Murphy placed second (15:28) and Megan Palmer came in third (15:31).
Other scoring runners were Mady Vicker in 10th place (16:08); Arden Stewart, 20th (16:28); Ally Spiroff, 22nd (16:36); and Emma Fallone, 47th (17:22).
The Highlanders were led by Lauren Holtz in fourth (15:31) while Sarah Miller was 14th (16:13); Kelsey Boyle, 15th (16:16); Caity Bobber, 16th (16:20); and Keali Bjork, 24th (16:42). Also running were Carrie Rice, 26th (16:43); and Andrea Dolsky 29th (16:44).
Vilar was pleased with how Holtz went out and battled with the top Bay runners. Dana Griepentrog won the junior varsity race for Homestead.
Bay will head up to Minnesota for Saturday's high-powered regional meet, the Griak Invitational. Last year, the Blue Dukes placed in the top 10 of the top high school division. Homestead will be at the Muskego Invitational on Saturday.

The Blue Dukes, short second runner Casey Easterday, who was out with a hip problem, still finished a commendable sixth in Bay's 16-school Vanden Avond Invitational Sept. 17.
Miller said holding Easterday out was a precautionary measure.
The Blue Dukes, who will be at the Laser Relays at Naga-Waukee Park on Saturday, scored 202 points for their spot at their own meet as Waukesha West won with 69.
Mike Camilleri turned in a clocking of 17 minutes, 4 seconds on the 5,000-meter Kletzsch Park course, good for 13th. Other scoring runners were Rob Cary, 36th (18:06); Cole Woodliff, 49th (18:25); Stuart Gilreath, 51st (18:31); and Devon Lawler in 53rd (18:32).
Also running were Reid Ziolkowski, 70th (18:55) and Jordan Lester, 76th (19:15).
Miller was impressed with Camilleri's race on a difficult course.
Nicolet boys cross country
It was an impressive day all-around for the Knights' boys team, as they took fourth of 16-schools in the Whitefish Bay Vanden Avond Invitational Sept. 17.
Nicolet scored 122 points as Waukesha West won with 69, Wisconsin Lutheran was second (95) and Brookfield East third (118).
Josh Greenberg continued his impressive season with a 10th-place showing on the 5,000-meter course (16:59) while teammate Nate Frazer was right on heels in 12th (16:59).
Other scoring runners included Ethan Klein, 23rd (17:49); Jeffrey McClain, 32nd (18:01); and Brandon Zall 45th (18:20). Also running were Matt Bootsma, 55th (18:36) and Tamir Klein, 61st (18:47).
Nicolet was impressive on the junior varsity end of the meet, winning the team portion behind individual champion Sean Mannion (18:18).
The Nicolet girls were 10th of 14 at the Vanden Avond as they scored 251. North Shore rivals Whitefish Bay (36) and Homestead (73), ranked one-two in the state, respectively, dominated the meet.

A strong service game led the way to an easy 25-11, 25-8, 25-12 victory for the Highlanders over West Allis Central on Sept. 16.
"We controlled the tempo of the match from start to finish with our ball control and aggressive serving (22 team aces)," said Homestead coach Todd Lyon. "Our goal all year has been to control matches with our defense, serve aggressively and spread our offense and we did just that."
The Highlanders were led by Brian Hoffman with eight kills and two blocks; Will Ault with 23 assists; Josiah Spindler with nine digs; and Adam Sweet and Patrick Jones with five aces apiece.
Homestead will host Nicolet at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Kappel hit Clem Robertson with a 20-yard TD strike to tie the score at 7-7 in the first quarter and then his 10-yard effort to Shane Wilson made it 21-14 in the second quarter, but that was all Nicolet could muster as the Pirates outgained them 339-138.

Homestead, which took fifth in a tough, talent-laden nine-hole Sheboygan North Tourney at Whistling Straights on Sept. 17, has a simple game plan, according to coach John Krueger.
"What we have to do is reduce our putts," he said. "It's been a big emphasis of ours in practice. We have a chance for (the title). It's right there."
Katie Zganjar led the Highlanders at the Whistling Straights meet, taking second individually with a 43. WIAA regional competition will be held at Blackstone Creek in Germantown on Sept. 30.
