Sports Wrapups: Sept. 15

For Shorewood cross country runner Peter Drews and the rest of the Division 2 state power Greyhounds, it doesn't matter what the size of the school is that they're competing against, just as long as they get a chance to beat them.

And for the third straight meet, the Greyhounds came close to defeating some Division I powers, as behind Drews' individual title, they took a strong third in the 13-school Arrowhead Invitational on Sept. 10.

"Our team motto is 'maximum effort,' " said Drews. "We don't worry about what we can't control. If we win, so be it, but if we don't it's nice to be competitive."

That attitude is important to Shorewood coach Dominic Newman, whose team has lost to Division I state powers Marquette and Brookfield Central in previous meets and now to Waukesha West (78) and Arrowhead (85) at Arrowhead. The Greyhounds were right on the host Warhawks' heels with 87 in recording their first third to go with two seconds.

"It's part of our philosophy," Newman said. "... It's about where we'd like to be, and where we think we can be. We have to be competitive with teams like Arrowhead, West and Germantown (fourth with 101) to show that we can rise to the occasion in the big meets when we have to."

And behind the leadership of Drews and third place Ben Tyler, it looks like Shorewood will be rising to the occasion in many meets this fall. It entered the meet top-ranked in Division 2 state polls.

Drews battled with Tyler and Arrowhead's Russell Sandvold for much of the 5,000-meter race.

"We hit a big surge right after the mile mark," Drews said. "Our goal was to get the lead and try to hold out the rest of the way. Ben was a big help in that regard. He even took the lead around the two-mile mark. We made our last big push right around that last back corner (with about 800 meters to go)."

Drews was clocked in 16 minutes, 11 seconds for his win while Sandvold finished second in 16:15, Tyler third (16:19) and Homestead's Nate Routhier fifth (16:30).

Other scoring runners for the Greyhounds included John Taylor in 24th (17:23), Joseph Pendleton in 25th (17:27) and John Papke in 34th (17:44). Also running were Aidan Mazur in 40th (17:52) and Brendan Vorphal in 43rd (17:54).

Other local teams involved in the meet included Nicolet in sixth (185), Whitefish Bay in seventh (207) and Homestead in eighth (210).

For Nicolet, Nathan Frazer was 15th (16:57), Josh Greenberg, 18th (17:08) and Ethan Klein, 32nd (17:40); while for Bay, Mike Camilleri was 19th (17:09), Casey Easterday, 22nd (17:17) and Cole Woodliff, 46th (17:57). Miller said he was especially pleased with the efforts of Camilleri and Easterday.

For Homestead, Routhier was supported by Alex Mattson in 30th (17:37).

North Shore girls cross country

It's just the second week of September and its a long ways until state, but the Homestead girls cross country laid down an impressive gauntlet by beating defending WIAA champion and decade-long North Shore titlist Whitefish Bay to win the Arrowhead Invitational on Sept. 10.

"This was an early test," said Highlanders coach Victor Vilar of his team's second major meet championship in as many weeks, "and the girls responded well. They kept together and they hit their two-kilometer (2,000 meters) splits perfectly. They're ready to keep moving forward."

"But we're not going to be foolish about this. We know that they (the Blue Dukes) will be back. They're still the most respected team in the state."

Bay coach Mike Miller said the respect is nice, but noted he will be looking for better results soon.

"We have work to do," he said, "but I was encouraged and pleased with our packing. We looked more like a team than we did last weekend (when Bay won the Marshfield Invitational title). We were just a little too aggressive early today. That's something we can work on."

The Highlanders won the 14-school event with 68 points as Bay was second with 82 and state powers Waukesha West (103) and Arrowhead (105) were third and fourth, respectively. The achievement was all the more impressive as Bay, West and Arrowhead were all immediately ahead of the Highlanders in state polls heading into the meet. Meanwhile, Shorewood was eighth in the meet (178) and Nicolet 13th (347).

A key to Homestead's success was that it put three runners ahead of the Blue Dukes second. Lauren Holtz led the Highlanders with a fifth place showing (14 minutes, 53 seconds) on the flat and fast 4,000-meter Arrowhead High School course.

Holtz said that the team, which was eighth in state last season, has surpassed even her wildest expectations. Homestead is in its first fall working with Vilar, after the sad passing of former Coach Andy Edington last spring.

"I'm honestly shocked that we've come together so well," Holtz said. "It's so motivating to see us come together as one like this. … Coach Victor has done such a nice job, but we still can't help thinking about Coach Edington sometimes."

Other scoring runners for Homestead included Sarah Miller in ninth (15:18), Caity Bobber in 12th (15:25), Kelsey Boyle in 20th (15:39) and Keali Bjork in 22nd (15:41). Also running were Carrie Rice in 24th (15:45) and Andrea Dolsky in 32nd (16:04).

For the state champion Blue Dukes, several of whom were just getting over a weekend illness that left the team short-handed at Marshfield, Emma-Lisa Murphy was fourth in a personal best of 14:46.

Other scoring runners included Megan Palmer in 13th (15:28), Kenzie Vicker in 14th (15:29), Maddy Vicker in 25th (15:48) and Arden Stewart in 26th (15:52). Ally Spiroff was 28th (15:59) and Emma Fallone, 63rd (17:03).

Shorewood was led by Emily Bacchuber in 11th (15:19) as Haley Holan was 36th (16:15), Jenny Vrobel, 37th (16:16) and Morgan Baker, 38th (16:16).

Christie Crossman topped a short-handed Nicolet team, taking 54th (16:46).

Homestead's junior varsity won its meet, beating Arrowhead on the sixth-runner tiebreaker as Dana Griepentrog and Katie Smigelski went one-two, respectively.

Numbers do count for something in this world and the depth-heavy Highlanders made the most of theirs by riding just one first plus a boat-load of fourth through seventh place finishes to the title in the Brookfield East Spartan Invitational on Saturday.

"It's not surprising, but it is a very good win," said Homestead coach Mark Gwidt. "We put a lot of kids in the top six. ... We're training hard but racing well and a win like this leaves us very optimistic."

Especially in light of the North Shore Conference Relays that the Highlanders competed in on Sept. 15.

Homestead scored 397 points to outdistance Madison West (365.5) in the nine-team field.

Maiya Hilliard took the only first for Homestead in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.25). She got help from Maggie Stolz (third 1:12.28) and Mary Gabe in seventh (1:13.02).

"That event really sealed the deal for us," Gwidt said.

Other top performances by event for the Highlanders included 200 medley relay - Eva Schulteis, Gabe, Hilliard and Ellie Poole, third (1:55.12); 200 freestyle - Chloe Lewis, fifth (2:00.59), Casey Hagen, sixth (2:02.85); 200 individual medley - Stolz, seventh (2:19.43), Gabe, eighth (2:24.12); 50 free - Poole, seventh (26.44); 100 butterfly - Schulteis, fifth (1:02.27), Lewis, sixth (1:03.28); 100 free - Poole, fourth (56.44), Hilliard, sixth (57.03); 500 free - Kayla Dlugopolski, sixth (5:29.74); 200 free relay - Hilliard, Hagen, Lewis and Dlugopolski, fifth (1:45.39); 100 backstroke - Schulteis, second (1:02.5), Cheyanne Carbonne, eighth (1:05.34); 400 free relay - Schulteis, Dlugopolski, Lewis and Poole, fifth (3:48.79).

Homestead football

Both Mike Collins and Zach Enea returned kicks for scores as the Highlanders cruised to a 49-7 win over Grafton in its North Shore opener Friday night.

Coach Dave Keel was pleased with the display of speed the two high-profile track athletes showed.

"I love to have those types of kids out there," he said. "The more speed and agility we can get on the field, the better. This was a good game overall. … The offensive line had a nice game as a unit."

The Highlanders (1-0 in conference, 3-0 overall) will visit Milwaukee Lutheran (0-1, 1-2) in a 7 p.m. Thursday tilt. The pass-happy Red Knights dropped a wild, 63-40, decision to Cedarburg (1-0, 3-0) on Friday.

Collins caught his first touchdown pass of the year, a 32-yard strike from Cody Berger, and then later returned a punt 79 yards for a TD. Enea closed out the scoring after Grafton's only TD in the second half with an 88-yard kickoff return.

In between, Bryan Bronaugh scored on an eight-yard run, Matt Stern hit Coy Smith with a 50-yard TD toss and both Alex Morgan (23 yards) and Darral Rucker (three yards) broke the plane with TD runs as Keel played almost everybody on his bench.

Brown Deer girls volleyball

After an uneven start in opening its defense of its Woodland Conference title, the Falcons got a good boost Monday night, when they won the Milwaukee Riverside Invitational.

"I was proud of the girls for winning this tournament without losing a game," said Falcons coach Amy Wagner. "They are learning to finish matches. We did have some up and down play, but overall the Lady Falcons are cleaning up their game and enjoying playing with each other on the court."

Senior outside hitter Monique Morris led the team in kills with 33 while Ariel Feiertag had 22. Setter Liz Seonbuchner had 35 assists and Mali Urpanil led the team in digs with 12.

Brown Deer, which beat Pewaukee but fell to St. Francis in its opening Woodland duals, went 4-0 at Riverside, beating Grafton (3-1), South Milwaukee (2-2), Milwaukee Riverside (1-3) and Milwaukee Hamilton (0-4) en route to the title.

In the 26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 16-25, 15-8 marathon win over Pewaukee on Sept. 10, the Falcons got 16 kills and four aces out of Morris, 14 assists out of Seonbuchner, eight digs out of Urpanil and four blocks out of Feiertag.

The resurgent St. Francis squad downed Brown Deer, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, on Sept. 8, as Morris had 15 kills.

Clare Chamberlain broke a five-year old school record in the 100 backstroke to lead the Greyhounds to a third place showing in their own invitational Saturday.

"We swam quite well Saturday, as we usually do in our own invite," Shorewood Coach Rob McCabe said. "We bring in some quality teams and the girls rise up to race to the challenge."

Chamberlain was clocked in 58.86 seconds in breaking the record of Cassie Peterson-Huber. She also earned a second in the 200 individual medley (2:10.31). Almost lost in the shuffle, Ellie Sellinger also won two events, taking the 200 freestyle (1:56.8) and the 100 free (54.37).

Ellen Stello also had a good meet, taking seconds in both the 100 butterfly (1:01.82) and the 500 free (5:24.81). Other seconds went to the 200 medley relay (1:55.71) and the 400 free relay (3:43.21). Both units included Sellinger, Stello, Lauren Lanphere and Chamberlain. Lanphere was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.09) and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:21.36).

Fifths were taken by Hallie Sanders in the 50 free (27.13) and Sonya Tomasiewicz in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.59).

The 200 free relay team of Tomasiewicz, Sanders, Lexie Lanphere and Molly Hayes was sixth (1:51.79).

Burlington won the meet with 455.5, Bay Port was second with 388, while the Greyhounds came in with 386.5.

Brown Deer soccer

In a light week, the Falcons improved to 5-4-1 overall with a rally for a 3-1 win over Greendale on Sept. 9.

"After a shaky start and giving up a quick goal six minutes into the match, we regrouped and were able to storm back," said Falcons coach Joe Shokatz.

Senior Rafath Fanou scored with an assist from junior Sam Kuchenreuther to tie the score at the 13-minute mark and 10 minutes after that, Brown Deer was able to take the lead on what Shokatz called a "beautiful goal" by freshman Sean Stelter with an assist from David Radtke.

The second half saw the Falcons maintain pressure on Greendale, with an insurance goal scored by Kuchenreuther in the 65th minute. Brown Deer is now 2-1 in Woodland play and is in the midst of a hectic week, including a visit to Watertown at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and then a road trip to the Waupun Quad at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Falcons didn't quite have enough depth as they dropped a 54-40 Woodland Conference decision to Pewaukee on Sept. 9.

Brown Deer got victories from Caroline Roos in the 200-yard freestyle, Caroline Bridges in the 50 free and Dani Gross in the 500 free. Highlight performances according to co-coach John Douglass included Kevlin Holmes in the 200 free, 100 backstroke and 400 free relay; Kim Surfus in the 100 butterfly, Amanda Arnold in the 500 free, and Kelly Ross and Jean Stathas in the 200 individual medley.

"We were winning the meet until the last three events," Douglass said. "That's when the numbers game caught up to us. They just had too many athletes for us to overcome."

The Falcons will be at the Woodland Conference Relays at Shorewood at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 23.

NS conference girls golf

The Blue Dukes maintained their lead in the North Shore Conference by edging Homestead 176-177 in a nine-hole mini-meet on Monday at North Shore Country Club.

The 18-hole conference finale will be at 1 p.m. Sept. 23 back at North Shore CC.

The Knights went 5-1 in pool play, downing Greenfield and Wauwatosa East before splitting with Westosha Central. They defeated West Bend West in the quarterfinals 21-25, 25-23, 15-9, before falling to Burlington, 26-24, 25-23. Nicolet enters this week at 2-0 in conference (after a rout of Port Washington on Sept. 10). The Knights have a 12-2-1 match record and an overall game record of 25-5. They started the week ranked sixth in the state.

The Knights had a positive week, turning in dual meet victories over West Bend East and Germantown.

"That was a big win over Germantown," said Knights coach Dwight Davis.
