Want to have a bigger say in your local government?
A number of seats are opening up throughout the North Shore in 2013, to be filled in the April 2 spring election. If necessary, a primary might be held Feb. 19 to narrow the list of candidates in the general election.
Incumbents and challengers must submit a campaign registration statement, declaration of candidacy and nomination papers by 5 p.m. Jan. 2 to their local filing officer. Incumbents wishing not to run must submit a declaration of non-candidacy by 5 p.m. Dec. 21.
By state law, candidates may not circulate nomination forms or solicit signatures before Saturday.
Nomination papers will be available Saturday at local village or city halls for village board, common council and municipal judge positions. Campaign registration statements and declaration of candidacy forms will be available at local school districts. All forms are available at the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board website, gab.wi.gov, by following the "Elections" and "Candidates - Getting on the Ballot" links.
Below are the open seats.
Village Board - two seats now held by Eido Walny and Michael Barth. Barth has announced he will run for re-election. Trustees serve three-year terms and earn $1,200 annually.
Municipal Court Judge Charles Barr is up for re-election for a three-year term which pays $3,600 annually.
Village Hall is located at 9075 N. Regent Road.
Village Board - three seats, held by trustees Jeff Baker, Gary Springman and Village President Carl Krueger. Board members serve three-year terms. Trustees earn $3,600 annual and the Village President earns $5,400 annually.
Village Hall is located at 4800 W. Green Brook Drive.
School Board - two seats currently held by Barry Godshaw and Lisa Zielinski, who has announced she will run for re-election. Board members serve for three years and earn $3,100 per year.
District offices are located at 8200 N. 60th St.
Village Board - two seats now held by Eric Fonstad and Douglas H. Frazer. Trustees serve three-year terms and are not paid.
Village Hall is located at 7200 N. Santa Monica Blvd.
Fox Point-Bayside District
School Board - two seats currently held by board President Michael Weiss and Eliz Greene. The term length is three years and the position is unpaid.
District offices are located at 7300 N. Lombardy Road.
Common Council - three seats, held by District 1 Alderman Robert Whitaker, District 3 Alderman Elliott Moeser and District 5 Alderman Izzy Goldberg. Alderman serve two-year terms and are paid $2,700 annually.
City Hall is located at 5900 N. Milwaukee River Parkway.
Glendale-River Hills District
School Board - two seats now held by board President Robert Roska and Vice President Jean Pereles-Strouse. Board members serve three-year terms. The board president earns $600 annually and all other members earn $540.
District offices are located at 2600 W. Mill Road.
Maple Dale-Indian Hills District
School Board - one seat, held by Jim LeTart. Board members serve three-year terms and are not paid.
District offices are located at 8337 N. Port Washington Road.
Common Council - two seats, currently occupied by District 1 Alderman and Council President Dan Abendroth, who has announced he will run for mayor in 2013, and District 4 Alderman John Wirth, who had announced he will not seek re-election. Aldermen serve three-year terms and earn $4,800 annually.
Mayor - currently held by Curt Gielow. The mayor earns $9,600 annually and serves a three-year term.
City Hall is located at 11333 N. Cedarburg Road.
School Board - two seats, now held by Vice President Mary Cyrier and Robert Perry, who has announced non-candidacy. Board members serve three-year terms and are not paid.
District offices are located at 5000 W. Mequon Road.
School Board - one seat held by Ellen Redeker. Board members serve three-year terms and earn $1,000 per year.
District offices are located at 6701 N. Jan Nicolet Road.
North Shore Municipal Court
Brown Deer and Glendale recently combined municipal courts to form the North Shore Municipal Court. The two judge positions, currently held by David M. Victor in Brown Deer and Christopher Lipscomb in Glendale, will be replaced with a single traveling judge with a three-year term. Officials expect each municipality to contribute its current judge's salary toward the new judge, $8,000 annually from Brown Deer and $14,000 annual from Glendale.
Because the position is multi-jurisdictional, applicants must file with the Milwaukee County Election Commission, located in Milwaukee County Courthouse room 307-D, 901 N. Ninth St.
Village Board - two seats now held by Stephen Anderson and David Fritz. Members of the Village Board serve three-year terms and are not paid.
Village Hall is located at 7650 N. Pheasant Lane.
Village Board - two seats, currently held by Ellen Eckman and Patrick Linnane. Trustees serve three-year terms and make $1,000 annually.
Village Hall is located at 3930 N. Murray Ave.
School Board - three seats, two held by President Rob Reinhoffer and Vice President Colin Plese. The third seat, recently vacated by Michael Mishlove, will be filled by a board appointee until the April election. The top two overall vote-getters will each win one of the three-year terms. The third overall vote-getter will win Mishlove's seat and will serve the duration of his term, through April, 2014.
Board members earn $1,000 annually and the board President earns $1,200.
District offices are located at 1701 E. Capitol Drive.
Village Board - two seats, held by David Lange and John Treffert. Trustees earn $1,800 throughout their three-year terms.
Village Hall is located at 250 Elm St.
Village Board - two seats now held by Jay Miller and James Roemer. Trustees serve three-year terms and earn $600 annually.
Village Hall is located at 5300 N. Marlborough Drive.
School Board - two seats, currently occupied by Michael Mosner and Cheryl Maranto. Board members serve three-year terms and earn $1,200 per year. The board President earns $1,250 annually.
District offices are located at 1200 E. Fairmount Ave.
