Deadline approaching

for water hookup

Bayside - Residents in the southwest part of the village have until noon Friday to sign up for the voluntary municipal water project.

Residents who sign up for the project before then can participate in village financing through B-series bonds; residents who sign up after cannot.

The Village Board will hold a public hearing on Feb. 7 regarding special assessments for homeowners who choose to participate.

Mequon-Thiensville holds logo contest

Mequon - The Mequon-Thiensville School District is crowdsourcing the creation of its new logo with a communitywide contest.

According to a district release, all community members, including past and current students, can enter designs. Contestants must live in or have attended the Mequon-Thiensville district, and are allowed to submit multiple entries.

The winning look will go on the district website, letterhead and be used in future branding.

"The logo currently being used by the Mequon-Thiensville School District has become outdated and we seek an updated logo that builds on the fine tradition of the school district," Superintendent Demond Means said in the release. "We are very excited to see the submitted designs."

The district is accepting entries through Feb. 8 at mtlogocontest.com and will announce a winner in early March.

Glendale postpone talks

about Concert Stage

Glendale - The Glendale Common Council on Monday pushed back the discussion about the Glendale Concert Stage fundraising project to its March 11 meeting.

Back in October, city officials were discussing how to replace the portable stage used for Independence Day celebrations and the Music in the Glen concert series, which has been decommissioned after nearly 20 years of use.

According to Mayor Jerry Tepper a new stage is going to happen, the question is when funds should be raised for it. The North Shore Library Board is discussing whether or not they are going to build a new library, and the city does not want there to be conflicting fundraising projects.

Shorewood church

installs new co-pastor

Shorewood - North Shore Presbyterian Church installed Christopher Davis as its new co-pastor last week.

According to an NSPC news release, Rev. Davis is just the sixth new pastor to be installed in the history of the 90-year-old church.

North Shore Presbyterian Church is located at 4048 N. Bartlett Avenue.

Concordia has new education director

Mequon - The Rev. Dr. David Birner is Concordia University Wisconsin's new executive director of International Education, effective February, according to a CUW news release.

Birner will work with deans and program directors to "further define and expand CUW's global footprint," according to the release.

"I am looking forward to using my networks and life experience to support and promote the reputation of CUW, both here in the U.S. and abroad," said Birner in the release. "I am especially excited to join such an energetic, spirited and talented staff."

Tree and wreath

pickup under way

Bayside - Residents can put out trees and wreaths for pickup Thursday and Friday.

Village staff request that metal and foreign items be removed from the trees and wreaths, and that they be placed curbside by 7 a.m.

The trees and wreaths are chipped into mulch.

City Hall approved

as common polling place

Glendale - Glendale City Hall, 5909 N. Milwaukee River Parkway, will be the only polling place for the spring primary election after a Common Council decision Monday.

The spring primary is Feb. 19.

School Board OKs bonds for energy projects

Shorewood - The Shorewood School Board approved the issuance of general obligation bonds not to exceed $6,015,000 for the public purpose of paying the cost of energy efficiency projects at School District buildings.

The board accepted the sale of bonds totaling $5,015,000, according to Business Director Mark Boehlke.

These improvements include energy management systems and controls, lighting systems, plumbing efficiency, structural and building envelopes, electrical systems, mechanical and ventilation systems, as well as utility services and technology upgrades.

The majority of the projects will be done this summer.

Administrative salaries

see slight increase

Shorewood - The Shorewood School Board approved a 2 percent increase to administrative salaries for the 2012-2013 school year.

Every year a recommendation for increases to administrative salaries is brought to the board for approval. The 2012-13 budget allowed for a 2 percent increase to administrative salaries. This increase results in a total compensation package increase of 0.73 percent for the administrative group. The lower total compensation package increase is due to a decrease in health premiums for 2012-13.

Council approves Mini's Restaurant liquor license

Glendale - The Glendale Common Council on Monday approved the issuance of a 2012-13 liquor license to Mini's Restaurant, 6343 N. Green Bay Road.

Glendale - Nicolet graduates Cherie Banner and Jennifer Goldbeck of Cedarburg-based Delicately Delicious bakery will open a "pop-up shop" at Bayshore Town Center in Glendale from Jan. 31 to Feb. 14.

"The menu is influenced by the Valentines holiday, with lovely flavors such as passion fruit and a chocolate strawberry riff on the recently departed but beloved Hostess cupcake," said Banner in a Delicately Delicious news release.

Two retire from Shorewood School District

Shorewood - The Shorewood School Board approved the retirements of two employees.

Norm Greene from the Facilities and Maintenance Department's last day is May 31. Lake Bluff secretary Peggy Eanelli is retiring at the end of the school year, effective June 14.

cholesterol screening

The North Shore Health Department is offering health screenings to check blood pressure, weight, cholesterol levels - total, HDL (good), and LDL (bad) - as well as triglycerides and blood sugar.

The tests take about 15 minutes and cost $30. Nurses explain results to patients.

Clinics are held once a month from 8 to 10 a.m. on the third Wednesday in the Brown Deer office and the fourth Tuesday in the Shorewood office. Those interested can call (414) 371-2980 to schedule an appointment.

Maple Dale-Indian

Hill registration set

River Hills - Registration for junior kindergarten in the Maple Dale-Indian Hill School District will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at Indian Hill School, 1101 W. Dean Road.

Eligible children must be 4 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2012.

As part of the registration process, parents must bring each child's birth certificate and some proof of residence, and will also be asked to provide emergency information and immunization dates.

Nicolet senior nominated

to US Service Academy

Glendale - Nicolet senior Nicholas Sullivan was one of 21 students in Wisconsin's 5th Congressional District nominated to United States Service Academies, according to a release from Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner's office.

Sullivan, the son of Matthew and Lisa, is a competing alternate nominee to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

NSFD to review

arbitrators in February

The North Shore Fire Department board of directors will likely review a shortlist of candidates for an arbitrator/mediator position at its February meeting.

Board members said at their December meeting that an arbitrator or mediator would be useful in creating a new funding formula for 2016. Bayside Village President Samuel Dickman requested at the NSFD board meeting that Fire Chief Robert Whitaker bring in a list of two to three candidates for their next meeting.

Whitaker said he has been in contact with arbitration firms and has spoken with a Racine public official who is well-suited to the task.

Village Board to resume footbridge

discussions in February

Fox Point - An update on the Bridge Lane ravine footbridge is expected at the next Village Board meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at Village Hall, 7200 N. Santa Monica Blvd.

Among the issues discussed will be the status of fundraising efforts from a locally formed group, Footbridge Friends.

Residents Larry Booth and Bob Cory came before the board with questions on the fundraising progress during a public comment portion of the meeting. Because the footbridge was not placed on the meeting agenda, board members refrained from discussing the issue with Booth and Cory.

"You use Robert's Rules of Order as a reason not to answer reasonable questions," Booth said. "You shoot people down. It's disgusting to see how you run this organization."

Mexican restaurant to replace

long-dormant Outback building

Fox Point - The Fox Point Village Board authorized Jose's Blue Sombrero to open for business in an existing restaurant space at 8617 N. Port Washington Road.

Jose's will fill the building, previously occupied by Outback Steakhouse, that was constructed in 2005 after the RiverPoint Cinema closed and was razed at the site. Outback used the space for about four years.

The DeRosa Corp. will operate the Jose's restaurant in Fox Point alongside other eateries throughout the metro area. The company has Jose's restaurants in Brookfield and Racine and also runs Eddie Martini's in Wauwatosa, ParkSide 23 in Brookfield and several Chancery restaurants.

Board OKs purchase

of police squad car

Fox Point - In keeping with its traditional replacement cycle, the Fox Point Police Department will soon have a new vehicle in its fleet.

The Village Board approved a request by Police Chief Tom Czaja to purchase a Ford Interceptor all-wheel drive SUV at a cost of $27,291.

Czaja sought bids from three dealerships, and Ewald Automotive Group came in with the lowest bid. The village allocated $28,500 in its 2013 budget for a new vehicle.

Fox Point to recognize

migratory bird day

Fox Point - International Migratory Bird Day will be recognized in Fox Point on May 11, following passage of a resolution by the Village Board.

The initiative is designed to bring public attention toward the 350 bird species that travel between nesting habitats in communities such as Fox Point and wintering habitats in a number of southerly locales.

Fox Point's participation in International Migratory Bird Day is tied to its Bird City Wisconsin designation.

Two residents join business

development committee

Thiensville - Two residents are expected to join 12 existing members on the village's Business Renaissance Commission, an appointed body that examines issues pertaining to the Thiensville commercial corridor.

Residents John Abbott and Charles Imig applied for commission seats. Last week, the Village Board, acting as a Committee of the Whole, recommended appointing them. Definitive action will be taken at the next board meeting Jan. 21.

Business Renaissance members include several members of the Village Board and staff, in addition to Thiensville business owners and residents.

Village recognizes students

for earning Eagle Scout badges

Thiensville - Village officials on Monday recognized two local Boy Scouts for their service to the community.

Clayton Anderson and Eric Hansen, members of Boy Scout Troop No. 852, recently achieved Eagle Scout status, the highest rank a scout can receive. Eagle Scout recipients embark on an extensive community service project before earning the rank.

The Village Board is signing off on certificates of recognition for both scouts.

Atwater PTO gives

donation to school

Shorewood - The Atwater Parent Teacher Organization donated $8,280 in grant funding to Atwater Elementary School.

Each year, the Atwater PTO provides teachers and staff the opportunity to obtain funding through the PTO grant program. The purpose is to supplement classroom and building budgets for the purchase of materials designed to support classroom instruction.

Items purchased with the $8,000 include equipment and technology to start a media/recording studio, iPods for the English Language Learning program books and new digital cameras for kindergarten.

City approves purchase

of new K-9 vehicle

Mequon - The Mequon Common Council approved the purchase of a 2013 Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicle to replace the current K-9 vehicle.

The cost of the vehicle is $25,999, and Project K-9 Inc., the fundraising entity supporting the K-9 unit, is providing $15,000 to offset the cost. Funds from the police fleet vehicle account will cover the balance.

Fox Point names interim

village manager

Fox Point - Fox Point Chief of Police Tom Czaja has been named the interim village manager until a replacement for Susan Robertson is found.

After 17 years with Fox Point, Robertson accepted a position as city administrator of Sun Valley, Idaho. Her last day as the Fox Point village manager was Dec. 27.
