Newcomer Linnane, incumbent Eckman in as trustees

Shorewood — Newcomer Patrick Linnane and incumbent Ellen Eckman out distanced the field of four candidates seeking two open seats on the Shorewood Village Board in the April 6 election, defeating challengers Don Ford and Timothy Wick.

Eckman was first elected to the board in 2001. This will be her fourth term.

"I am delighted to be able to continue to serve," she said. "I have a lot of things that I want to see through to the finish, particularly Capitol Drive."

Linnane said campaigning for office was a positive experience for him.

"I was fortunate to have the time to spend talking to people," he said. "That confirmed my belief that we have a great village and residents dedicated to it. I made some new friends and re-energized old friendships."

Linnane credited a group of people who worked to support his campaign during the last few months.

Eckman, 63, lives at 2500 E. Beverly Road. She is married, has two adult children and two grandchildren. She has a doctorate in urban education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is an associate professor of education at Marquette University.

Linnane, 66, lives at 1511 E. Beverly Road. He is married, has two adult children and three grandchildren. He has a master of science in education in the cultural and philosophical foundations of education. He is the semi retired owner of Patrick Linnane & Associates.

Trustees serve three-year terms and earn $1,000 a year.

Voter turnout in the election was 12.36 percent.

In other North Shore municipal races:

Fox Point: Newcomer Douglas Frazer and incumbent Eric Fonstad were the top two vote-getters in the Village Board race. They defeated Craig Kaplan and incumbent Sandy Garmer.

Frazer, 52, said he ran for office to offer a new perspective on the board. Important issues, Frazer said, include exploring shared services and managing costs.

Fonstad, 62, is completing his first term in office. He said he sought re-election to continue working toward maintaining the residential character of the village while maintaining services residents appreciate.

Glendale: In the 2nd Aldermanic District race, newcomer Daniel Sweeney unseated incumbent Brian Rice.

Sweeney, 30, has lived in the city for a year. Sweeney said he chose to throw his hat in the ring because he wanted to bring a fresh perspective to City Hall.

Rice, 37, was appointed in August 2008 to fill the seat left vacant when former alderman Joe Colacino moved from the city, had been working on improving communication in the district, e-mailing a newsletter to constituents and dropping off hard copies for residents without e-mail.

River Hills: Incumbents Steve Anderson and R. David Fritz were the top two vote-getters in the Village Board race. They defeated challengers Victor Harding and Katharine Stanford.

Anderson, 69, has been on the Village Board for eight years. This election season, Anderson said he has advocated toward continued efforts of making the community a friendly, safe and environmentally responsible community.

Fritz, 47, was appointed to the board in 2007, and this was his first run for office. Fritz said he is concerned about safety issues in the village, including traffic along Green Tree Road.
