Explore the outdoors with activities at SANC

Geologist Jim Rosenbaum discusses the geologic history of Lake Michigan. The program includes a brief outdoor walk and look at the lake-formed terrace, if weather permits.

Lake Michigan Full Moon Snowshoe: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 6; $12 for adult members, $14 for nonmember adults

Participants visit the ice formations of Lake Michigan in the light of a full moon, try calling owls and enjoy hot drinks indoors. Snowshoes are provided. If there is no snow, participants will hike on foot.

Concert features district's various bands

Shorewood - The Shorewood School District presents its second annual Band-O-Rama concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Shorewood High School Arena, 1701 E. Capitol Drive. Showcasing the district's entire band program, the concert features the combined Atwater and Lake Bluff fifth- and sixth-grade bands, the Shorewood Intermediate School seventh-grade concert band and eighth-grade symphonic band, and the Shorewood High School concert band and wind ensemble.

Orchestra presents children's concert

Whitefish Bay - The Whitefish Bay High School Orchestra presents Munchkin Magic! - its annual Music for Munchkins Children's Concert, starting at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the school, 1200 E. Fairmount Ave.

The event features a string instrument "petting zoo" from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m., during which children of all ages have a chance to touch, play and hear the various string instruments. Magical craft-making is also available during the same period.

The musical performance begins at 1:30 p.m. Fifth-graders from Cumberland and Richards elementary schools make a guest appearance at the program.

Glendale - Wisconsin Connections Academy hosts an information session at 11 a.m. Feb. 7 at the Radisson Milwaukee North Shore, 7065 N. Port Washington Road.

Sarah Chudnow Community hosts three free events

Mequon - The Sarah Chudnow Community, 10995 N. Market St., hosts three free events in February.

Lecturers and educators Jim and Katie Gennric present the second lecture in a two-part series on Chinese lifestyle and culture from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Feb. 7. The couple lived in China for four years and taught five semesters of an international business program.

At 2:30 p.m. Feb. 8, there will be a celebration for Tu B'Shevat, the day that marks the beginning of a "New Year for Trees." It includes an interactive story, accompanied by snacks (nuts and dried fruits from trees), grape juice of four different colors and traditional songs.

A panel of Rabbis including reform, conservative and orthodox congregations make an appearance at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 29. The Rabbinical panel discusses different Judaic views of love and relationships.

Stritch presents 'Quiet in the Land'

Foundation presents four fine arts programs

Mequon - The Weyenberg Public Library Foundation presents four programs in its 2012 Fine Arts Series at the Frank L. Weyenberg Public Library, 11345 N. Cedarburg Road.

The Fine Arts Series begins 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 with Yid Vicious: Klezmer Music in Concert. This eight-person live concert includes a variety of instrumental and vocal selections, ranging from sentimental chestnuts, rousing Bulgars, an original composition or two and possibly even a swing tune in Yiddish.

At 6:30 p.m. April 3, the library will host the Optimist Theater's To Be! Shakespeare Here and Now. Actor Ron Scot Fry will portray Shakespeare in this interactive presentation that combines dynamic interpretations of some of Shakespeare's most famous works with a humorous look at life in Renaissance England.

At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20, Wisconsin native and famed storyteller Tom Pease will use movement, sign language, humor and joy to create an interactive concert.

Finally, the Milwaukee Handbell Ensemble performs its original and unique assortment of timeless seasonal classics at 7 p.m. Nov. 26.

Initiative seeks sustainable food leaders

Shorewood - Victory Garden Initiative is looking for people to become leaders in the sustainable food movement. This training program, beginning Feb. 24, teaches people how to lead community gardening and food systems projects and events.

Introductory rate of $200 includes kickoff weekend retreat, one to two Saturday morning classes each month through December and ends in culmination of a Food Leader Certificate.

All-Star Readers can earn free ticket to Bucks game

Mequon - Children can earn a free ticket to a Milwaukee Bucks game by becoming an All-Star Reader at the Frank L. Weyenberg Library, 11345 N. Cedarburg Road.

Children must read 500 pages by Feb. 28 to earn a free ticket to Bucks home game at either 7:30 p.m. March 24 vs. the Indiana Pacers or 7:30 p.m. March 31 vs. the Memphis Grizzlies.

All-Star Readers and their guests will have the chance to shoot a free throw on the Bucks court after both games.

Children who read 750 pages by Feb. 28 will have their names entered to win an official Milwaukee Bucks autographed basketball for each game. In addition, 10 randomly selected children will participate in the Milwaukee Bucks Halftime High Five Tunnel, 10 randomly selected children will participate in the Bucks Kourtside Kids and 10 randomly selected children will be recognized on-court at halftime at each game.

The reading challenge is open to all children in third through 10th grade. Reading logs can be picked up at the library.

The challenge runs until Feb. 28, or while ticket vouchers are available.

Two elderly sisters are the center of an austere Norwegian religious community that has renounced all worldly pleasures. Into their world comes Babette, a French refugee, who decides to cook a lavish feast to thank them for their kindness to her. The village elders are suspicious of her intentions.

Tickets are $16 or $13 for senior citizens, full-time students and full-time clergy. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.

Bay Players presents 'The Wisdom of Eve'

Whitefish Bay - The Bay Players presents "The Wisdom of Eve," adapted from a short story by Mary Orr, at 8 p.m. March 30, 31, April 13 and 14 at Whitefish Bay High School, 1200 E. Fairmont Ave.

Eve is the center of this story of life in the New York theater world and her unscrupulous rise to Broadway stardom.

Resource center seeks vendors for fair

Shorewood - Vendors are needed for the eighth annual Shorewood Community Flea Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 19 at the Shorewood Village Center in the lower level of the Shorewood Public Library, 3920 N. Murray Ave.

Vendors can rent an 8-foot table for $20 to display sale items. The Shorewood Senior Resource Center is responsible for publicity, including lawn signs, posters and a classified ad in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Toys, household items, comic books, craft items, plants and collectibles have been sold at previous flea markets. No used clothing, food or food products will be accepted for sale.

Story times continue at Weyenberg library

Mequon - The Weyenberg Public Library, 11345 N. Cedarburg Road, continues Family Story Times through May 19.

Story Times will be held at 11 a.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday.

Family Story Times are an interactive way for children and families to participate together in stories, finger plays and songs.

Acacia presents 'Anne of Green Gables'

Follow the adventures of a wildly independent orphan with fiery red hair and a temper to match. Anne Shirley is mistakenly sent to live with a plain-spoken farmer and his spinster sister, who thought they were adopting a boy. She wins them and all of Prince Edward Island over with her irrepressible spirit and imagination.
