One Year to Go

As a political scientist, there is nothing I find more interesting than presidential politics. And in the subject of presidential politics, there is the continued fascination of the presidential election. Even though each presidential election is historic in nature, what a person has to do to become president becomes more and more questionable. What we do to our candidates is even more disturbing. Especially if you're the opposition.

As one may have gathered, I am not enthusiastic about reelecting President Barrack Obama. Ad his policies are wrong for America. The amount of money spent by the US government during his administration is alarming but what makes it even more outrages is the lack of results produced. Obama assumed the presidency with full knowledge that the country was in a financial crisis. Yet he continually shows that he is in over his head when it comes to the way the solution has been approached. The president has continued to make excuses for the lack of results. It was the Republicans, the tsunami, an earthquake, a snowstorm, the Arab spring, an early fall, the list goes on. He has forgotten one thing-leaders become great leaders by overcoming their obstacles. We don't get great leaders with great excuses.

Calling All Recalls

Nothing in moderation. But, will we ever get what we want? In Wisconsin, like the rest of the nation, we want better times. We want more economic opportunity. We want better results. We want a better economy. We want sunnier days. Is it too much to ask?

The past few years, we are being led to believe that government is the solution to all of our problems. If we only had more services! We could feed the poor, we could heal the sick, we could educate the children. If we only had lower taxes! We could keep more of our own money. We could spend more to stimulate the economy in our own way. We could save for our retirement. If we only had higher taxes! We would have better schools. The bridges could be replaced. The elderly could have a better retirement. We could have more and better teachers. We would be safer because of more policemen.

We don't seem to know what we want as a society. We thought we wanted one thing. We went to the polls and elected some people to take office for various positions. Now that they are there, they didn't do everything we expected them to do, so now it's time to kick them out. Next time, if we don't get better results, we'll throw those rascals out too.

Un-Occupy Everywhere

What is happening with the occupying wall street protests? Recent reports have shown that municipalities across the country are interested in clearing the streets and parks of all the youngsters who started out by exercising their First Amendment rights.

It started out so ideologically. They were protesting the lopsidedness and  inequality of the pay scales in the United States. Not having jobs, they were making far less and corporate executives. And they wanted that changed. They wanted their student loans forgiven. They wanted donations from working people so they could camp out in taxpayer-funded parks.

The Stupid Committee

It's official. The United States government and its elected officials are not going to do anything about the long-term debt. It's going to continue to grow, and it doesn't seem to be a large concern for anyone anymore. If it ever was.

The so-called super committee was supposed to be a bipartisan approach to the nations deficit and debt problem. I was equally weighted with Democrats and Republicans. The appointments to the committee were chosen based on the most ideological people that each party could find. They went to the committee under the guise that they would compromise but everybody held their ground. And nothing got accomplished.

Failure Is An Option

We are now entering the time of year in which we must now seriously consider who the Republican nominee is going to be for the presidential election in 2012. The nomination field is set, and one must be chosen. On the Democrat side, they already know who they are nominee is going to be. There is no contest. But, we should ask, why?

The real question to ask is this :are you better off now than you were four years ago? In most cases, for most Americans, the answer is simple. The answer is no. We continue to drag along in a stagnant economy. After four years, the policies of the administration should be directing the direction of the economy. But wait, they are. The uncertainty of the tax code in tax rates along with an increase in the amount of regulations that are being forced upon businesses has been showing up in the growth rate of the economy. It is dismal at best. Government spending is out of control. This also has not translated into economic recovery and lower unemployment. The policies of the administration are doing exactly what they are intended to do. They are designed to take the risk out of economic uncertainty while at the same time believe that they are improving the health and welfare not only of the citizens of this country, but of the world.
