Let the Children Pay

I was hoping for an interesting season of political debate about the budget process. At the local level, it could get ugly. At the state level, it has been ugly all along. At the federal level, it's just plain chaos.

The federal government is showing absolutely no sign of political will in order to rein in the annual deficits. We have been told for generations the dangers of budget deficits. Yet we continue to run them up like there's no tomorrow. So let's ask the bigger question; do these deficits really matter?

The Cowboy Poetry Festival

The world makes sense to me now. Well maybe not the entire world, but at least the government budgetary process. This week, we learned why it is become next to impossible, if not completely impossible, to cut back on any of the federal budget. We will have to keep borrowing $.40 of every dollar spent. Any further tax reductions will become a thing of the past. Senate majority leader Harry Reid brought it home for America-the Cowboy Poetry Festival.

Oh give me a poem, about the buffalo home. Where deer and the antelope stay. Where seldom I hear, a complaint about beer. And the Marlboros are fresh every day. How's that for an entry?

Barry Fills Out His Bracket

A few weeks ago when it was clear that the NFL owners and players were going to have a lockout, President Obama was asked by a reporter if he was going to intervene. President Obama said that he would not stating that it's something that the owners and the players union have to work out and it was not a subject that the president should be involved in. I was in complete agreement with the president. The president has far more priorities that need addressing and his complete attention than what is going on in the NFL especially during the off-season. I was hopeful that he was going to come to his senses and find that he has far too many crises to attend to and forgo a waste of time explaining his brackets for March madness. But I was wrong.

Perhaps this bothers me more than it should because I am not a college basketball fan, but President Obama has far too many things going on in the world that need his attention and college basketball is not one of them. First, there is Libya. After weeks of trying to figure out what's going on, the president has decided that Moammar Qaddafi needs to be removed from office. The United States is officially siding with the rebels... whoever they are. This comes after a crisis in Egypt in which the president has decided that Egyptian President Mubarak needs to go. The United States was sliding with the rebels who oppose the government... whoever they are. Whatever happened to ending the war in Iraq? The United States government is supposed to be helping the people of Iraq establish a stable government with their leader... whoever that is.

Mission Accomplished

I find it at least mildly ironic that the person who has been issued for 2009 Nobel Prize for peace has now ordered military action that has begun what has been called the Americas third war. Once again the United States is engaged with military action on another Muslim country. Wasn't part of President Obama's agenda a mission to help Muslim countries feel better about themselves and the United States? Are we accomplishing these missions?

About eight years ago, the United States stepped in to begin a humanitarian effort that would stop an evil dictator who was leading a mid eastern country from causing harm to his own people. Yes, at the time we were convinced that there were also weapons of mass destruction. Yet today, we are involved with Libya because we believe that an evil dictator, i.e. Momar Qaddafi, (or however it's spelled this year,) has also been stopped from committing mass murder on the people of his country. That's what we're being told this week. Of course, this will become clear when the president comes out and makes a statement about why we are involved in a military action in Libya. Then of course, we'll feel good about this because it is only going to be a limited effort. The war in Iraq was also supposed to be a very short war because we got used to short wars during operation Desert Storm. We got in, we got out. It was mission accomplished.

Vote for The Drunk Driver Guy

Election day for county executive is fast approaching. Did the primary election actually give us two candidates worth choosing from? There are many people who will say yes.

I got a call the other night from Mayor Tom Barrett. He wanted to discuss local politics, which is one of my favorite subjects. But as I tried to get in the conversation, the mayor just kept talking like he wasn't even listening to what I had to say. He was recommending that I vote for Chris Abele. But because the mayor would not let me get a word in edgewise, I think I will have to think this over.
